Senior executives at COSCO Shipping have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the strategic role of Piraeus, Greece’s largest port and a key gateway for maritime trade between Europe and Asia. During a recent meeting with a Greek journalistic delegation at the company’s Shanghai headquarters, COSCO emphasized its vision of Piraeus as a modern, international hub. The Chinese shipping giant, which has made significant investments in the port over the years, sees untapped potential for further development and plans to maximize these opportunities.
Interest in Greek Railways and Logistics Expansion
While COSCO has previously expressed interest in expanding its footprint in Greece, particularly in the Thriasio Plain area to establish a state-of-the-art product assembly and logistics center, representatives declined to comment on future investment plans. When asked about potential investments in the Greek railway sector, COSCO executives maintained a neutral stance, neither confirming nor denying ongoing interest. However, their statements leave the door open for future ventures in Greece’s transport and logistics sectors.
Piraeus: A Mediterranean Powerhouse
COSCO executives were clear about their primary focus: the port of Piraeus. They dismissed the possibility of investing in other Greek ports, underscoring their commitment to maximizing the value of Piraeus. As the largest port in the Mediterranean for container traffic and consistently ranked among Europe’s top five ports, Piraeus is central to COSCO’s strategy for facilitating trade between Asia and Europe.
Since taking over management of Piers II and III in 2009 through its subsidiary, PCT (Piraeus Container Terminal S.A.), and acquiring a 67% stake in the port in 2016, COSCO has invested approximately €1.8 billion in Piraeus. The group’s long-term vision includes expanding the port’s container terminal with a fourth pier, enabling it to handle over 10 million TEUs annually. This €350 million project has been a recurring topic in discussions with Greek authorities.
Cruise Base Expansion Underway
In addition to container operations, Piraeus is also enhancing its cruise capabilities. The port is currently constructing a new cruise base designed to accommodate the latest mega cruise ships, further solidifying its position as a leading hub in the Mediterranean.
With its eyes firmly set on Piraeus, COSCO continues to position the port as a pivotal link in the global supply chain, driving growth and connectivity between continents.
