Shanghai Holds Top Spot as Global Port Leader in H1 2025

Shanghai has retained its position as the world’s leading port during the first half of 2025, achieving a container throughput of 27.065 million TEU—a 6.1% year-on-year increase. The Yangshan port area contributed significantly, handling 14.056 million TEU, a 7.5% rise, and accounting for 51.9% of the port’s total container volume.

In the same period, Shanghai port managed a cargo throughput of 297 million tons, reflecting a modest 1.2% year-on-year growth. However, bulk and general cargo throughput declined by 8.9%, totaling 40.193 million tons.

Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) reported an operating revenue of RMB19.569 billion and a net profit of RMB8.04 billion for the first half of 2025. The container shipping market showed a fragile balance between supply and demand, with a slight recovery in shipping demand.

“SIPG’s performance was mainly driven by macroeconomic conditions and the demand for imported and exported goods, which are closely linked to the economic development of the hinterland,” SIPG stated.

The port company highlighted ongoing trends in the international shipping market, including vessel enlargement, operational alliances, digitalization, intelligence, green transformation, and end-to-end logistics. Liner companies are increasingly pursuing mergers, acquisitions, and capacity expansion, which SIPG noted will have profound and lasting effects on port development.

Despite facing multiple challenges, SIPG remains committed to its core operations and aims to enhance the service capacity of its hub port in the coming months.
