In August, the port of Shanghai, known as the world’s busiest for container traffic, achieved a new single-month record by handling 5.02 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

This record performance is credited to several factors. The typical peak export season, which runs from July through September, contributed to the surge. Additionally, an increase in container volume between China and the United States helped drive the numbers up, maintaining a steady growth in box throughput for the port.

The Gemini Cooperation, a partnership between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd established earlier this year, also played a role by increasing container transshipment volumes at the Shanghai port.

Looking at the year-to-date figures, the port handled 36.7 million TEUs from January to August, marking a 5.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Within August’s total, the Yangshan port was responsible for 2.57 million TEUs, which represents 51.2% of Shanghai port’s overall throughput for the month.
