Apollo in the Spotlight: Thierry Petit

In this edition of Apollo in the Spotlight, we featured Thierry Petit, a key figure at Agence Maritime Delpierre (AMD) in France. Thierry shares his journey, the unique strengths of AMD, and how the company is expanding its global reach while staying committed to excellent service and strong partnerships.

How did you get started in the logistics industry, and what has your journey been like up to this point?

In the mid-1980s, I had a choice between two jobs. One was to start commercial activities for a big housebuilder. The role involved attracting people during their shopping in malls and convincing them to book an appointment with us to explore the possibilities of building their own house.
The other was to begin as a shipping clerk at a shipbroker’s office in Rouen—a French port on the River Seine. I guess you can tell which one I chose!
That’s how I got started in the shipping industry.

How does your company set itself apart from competitors in the logistics space?

AMD is truly 100% dedicated to customs brokerage, with wide coverage across all French ports. We have a dedicated and professional staff with long experience in this field.
As a family-owned company, decision-makers are always close to the staff, allowing us to react quickly and adapt AMD’s focus and strategy.

What do you enjoy most about the logistics industry, and what makes your role particularly fulfilling?

I spent two years working for a French shipping agent that subcontracted its ship agency operations in Ukraine. This was just after Ukraine gained independence, and I can tell you—it was tough. New culture, new language, outdated technology, and freezing conditions… it was a real challenge. However, that experience made me much stronger when facing difficult times later in my career.

How do you view the French market for the rest of this year leading into 2025?

It’s all about politics, making it very complicated to predict. There are so many factors that could either get us back on track or bring us to a standstill.
France is entering a new period, at least for the next two years leading up to the presidential election, and nobody knows what the effects will be.

What motivated you to join Apollo network, and has it met your expectations so far?

AMD is committed to expanding its involvement in global services and freight forwarding. Many of the customers we
handle for customs clearance are asking for additional support and a full range of services, such as ex-works and sea freight. Joining a network like Apollo will certainly help us grow our market share in this area. It’s also a great opportunity to connect with forwarders from all over the world.

What’s one thing you enjoy most about being member of this community?

What I enjoy most is being a link in the chain and building new relationships with other agents in this industry.

How do you balance professional goals with personal growth?

It’s not an easy task! But I believe that when your professional activities are flourishing, it naturally supports your personal growth. On the other hand, having a calm and enriching personal life makes you stronger and more effective in your professional endeavors.
Everything is linked together.

What’s one thing your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?

I was a guitarist and singer in the 80’s !!

Thank you for sharing your story with us, Thierry!
