How did you get started in the logistics industry, and what has your journey been like up to this point?
I have always been interested in logistics and supply chain management, which led me to study the subject at Plymouth University in the UK. After completing my bachelor’s degree, I started working at an international logistics company, where I gained valuable experience in air freight, ocean freight, and freight forwarding.
In 2019, I joined CEF Logistics, a newly launched logistics company in Sri Lanka. I took on responsibility for both operations and business development. As I progressed in my role, I felt motivated to pursue further education and moved to Sweden to study for a Master’s degree in International Business Strategy. During my studies, I continued working with CEF Logistics, which allowed me to apply my academic knowledge directly in practice.
I’ve played an important role in driving CEF Logistics’ international expansion into the UAE, Sweden, and the Maldives, and we’re now planning to expand into Australia. I’m very proud of how I’ve grown both personally and professionally, and I truly enjoy growing alongside the company.
What do you enjoy most about the logistics industry, and what makes your role particularly fulfilling?
What I enjoy most about the logistics industry is the constantly changing environment and the wide range of situations we deal with. We’re responsible for responding to global changes and taking the necessary actions and decisions. This allows me to think creatively, solve problems in new ways, and continuously learn. It’s much more engaging than doing the same tasks every day.
In addition, I get to work with people from all over the world, and many colleagues have become close friends. This international collaboration makes my role even more meaningful and enjoyable.
What do you wish someone had told you before you started in logistics?
I would have been very grateful if someone had told me how many opportunities exist in the logistics industry and how enjoyable the work can be.
There are so many different paths to explore, and you can shape your career based on your interests. I wish I had known earlier how broad and dynamic this field really is.
How have you seen technology transform logistics in the past five years, and what are you most excited about for the future?
Technology has played a critical role in the supply chain over the past five years from changes in ERP systems to the implementation of AI.
Most logistics companies today are using advanced technologies such as robotics, IoT, last-mile delivery solutions, and artificial intelligence, which have completely changed the workflow.
I believe these technologies are essential for helping logistics meet the demands of other industries and for increasing efficiency while also reducing human involvement in many processes.
It’s exciting, but on the other hand, there’s a risk of losing flexibility and the human element if everything becomes too standardized.
How does your team approach risk management, and what’s one piece of advice you’d give to others about mitigating risks?
Since we operate in a rapidly changing global environment, risk management is extremely important to us. In our company and team, risk management begins with proactive planning and clear communication not only internally, but also with external partners.
We always aim to identify potential risks early, whether they are operational, financial, or related to external factors like customs delays or weather disruptions, and we take preventive action in advance. Our goal is always to stay one step ahead.
We also believe in building strong relationships with both local and international partners, which enables us to respond quickly and find alternative solutions when necessary.
One key piece of advice I’d offer is: never rely on just one option. Whether it’s a carrier, route, or supplier always have a backup plan. We see flexibility as one of the most valuable tools in effective risk mitigation.
If you could change one thing about the logistics industry, what would it be and what impact do you think it would have?
If I could change one thing about the logistics industry, it would be to improve transparency in communication across the supply chain.
There are still too many gaps between systems, regions, and partners which leads to delays, miscommunication, and inefficiencies. If we had more aligned platforms and clearer, real-time visibility across all parties involved, it would significantly improve planning accuracy, customer satisfaction, mitigate risk and cost efficiency. This would also reduce stress on teams, who often spend time following up manually. A more connected, transparent system would make the entire industry more resilient and responsive especially in times of crisis or disruption.
What motivated you to join this network, and has it met your expectations so far?
Yes, absolutely. I was motivated to join because I had already been working with members of the Atlas network since our company was founded, and all the partners have proven to be strong, professional, and reliable. We’ve never had any issues with any agents within the network, which built a strong foundation of trust. When we expanded into Sweden, we chose to join the Apollo network as well, based on the positive experience and trust we had developed through Atlas Group. It was a bit challenging at first to secure local business due to strong competition and limited market knowledge, but with the support of the network, I’ve been able to build new relationships and generate more business opportunities among the members.
What’s one resource or feature within the network you think more members should take advantage of?
One resource I believe more members should take advantage of or that could be further developed is a dedicated internal lead-sharing and communication platform. A more structured space to exchange business opportunities, updates, or capacity among members would strengthen collaboration and increase engagement across the network.
Additionally, it would be a great advantage if the network could involve with negotiate contract rates with carriers on behalf of members, based on the collective volume we move globally. This would not only help secure better pricing but also add more value to members when competing in local markets.
When you’re not focused on logistics, how do you like to unwind and enjoy your free time?
When I’m not focused on logistics, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, which helps me recharge and stay balanced. I also stay active through training, swimming, and cycling, and I love to relax in the sauna. In quieter moments, I like to read business news and follow industry trends shared on professional social media platforms.
What’s one thing your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?
One thing my colleagues might be surprised to learn about me is that I’m extremely goal oriented and dedicated for that. Once I set a goal, I’m fully committed and do everything it takes to achieve it no matter how challenging the journey may be.
Thank you, Gayan, for sharing your remarkable journey and the leadership that continues to inspire our global network.
